Elizabeth Marston: What we want can never happen. The world won’t let it.

William Marston: The world can’t stop us.

You probably have heard of the blockbuster Wonder Woman (2018), which has received praise for the important symbolism and feminist ideals in a much needed time of society. But, if you get to know of the story behind the creation of the world’s most famous female superhero, you would appreciate the reason that she represents such significant power more profoundly.

Directed by Angela Robinson, Professor Marston And The Wonder Women has its plot based on the origin making story of Wonder Woman, namely the polyamorous relationship of William Moulton Marston, his wife Elizabeth Holloway Marston and Mary Olive Byrne.

To me, there are two messages this “saucy origin story spoke of loud and clear for the audience to consider.

1.Women’s Capability Is Boundless

I write what I see about women I know women who are every bit as just and strong, and capable as Wonder Woman.

The exceptional psychologist Elizabeth Marston as described in the film was a “ferocious, hilarious and brilliant” woman whose biggest fear in life was to live under the shadow of the men in her life, the same reason that made her hesitant of marriage. Equally, or perhaps even more gifted than her husband William, she was denied the recognition she very much deserved simply because of her gender.

As you can see, Elizabeth herself understood that same reason, and she understandably expressed desperation for that unfairness passionately. With her brilliance, she came up with the breakthrough in the creation of the lie-detector test; however she still couldn’t obtain the same PhD as her husband.

Throughout history, we have known of many accomplished women whose contributions to the world were abundant and vital. Despite their constriction in a society not yet ready to acknowledge the power of the fairer sex, they rose above all criticism to prove their minds and their role in a man’s man’s world.

She is beautiful, guileless, kind, and pure of heart. You are brilliant, ferocious, hilarious, and a grade A bitch. Together, you are the perfect woman.

Opposed to Elizabeth, Olive’s personality falls on the other side of the spectrum. Olive was gentle, tender and kind, but she embraced her femininity in her existence wholeheartedly and unashamedly. In observing her, the Marstons also argued that her beauty was as much a curse as it was a gift for her, since it gave her an advantage but also hindered her other qualities in the eyes of others.

As William has exclaimed: “The only hope for civilization is the greater freedom, development and equality of women.”, women time and time again have proven their right to this world, but it would be impossible without the faith and support of men in the past.

We must respect the hard work of men and women before our time in their fight for women’s rights by recognizing the present obstacles that females today still face and strive to shatter those impediments.

“A woman must not be told how to use her freedom, she must find out for herself.”

2.The Largest Thing In Life Is The Truth

Professor William brought the invention of the lie-detector into his illustration of Wonder Woman, reshaping it as the “lasso of truth”, which forced those in contact with it to act completely truthful. This accessory has since become iconic of the female superhero and what she represents.

She comes from a distant place where there is beauty and justice, and respect. Now, we can debate the length of her hemline. But what is important is the way Wonder Woman reforms criminals. She makes them tell the truth. That is what she stands for.

At the time, the relationship of the three protagonists was uncommon to say the least, and even borderline abnormal in the eyes of people then. Living true to themselves has led to the destruction of their career, social life and even physical safety of their children. Indirectly, the hatred towards their affair also caused harm to Wonder Woman image and initially forced Elizabeth to put an end to their relationship.

However, as you could guess, all of them suffered greatly the consequences of not being accepted. Only when they were reunited did viewers witness the joy and happiness in the unconventional family and understand what it takes to overcome rejection.

Professor Marston And The Wonder Women (2017)

Through this, I believe all that Wonder Woman and her creators embodied represent to us the importance of having the courage to love and tell your truth to the world, no matter how unaccepting and cruel that world is.

Perhaps, the reason that Wonder Woman has become indispensable is because of the relevance of the ideals she symbolizes, transcending time and space.

To conclude, you must conquer all obstacles in your way of living your truth, because it is only then that you are truly living.

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women received critics score of 7.1 (IMDB), 86% (Rotten Tomatoes) and 68% (Metacritic).
